Medium Hairstyles

Medium hairstyles are the most popular length. They offer the versatility of longer hair, yet with more options than the short style.
Miriam McDonald's Hairstyles
See for example, this medium style that features a deep side part and soft curls all over.

This type of haircut can also be worn all over straight and smooth or all over wavy.

Add some highlights and lowlights throughout for added pop.

Penetrating Oils + Heat = Instant Thickness & Strength

Instead of adding my usual Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Honey to my Deep Conditioners, I decided to mix:

- 3tsps of Coconut Oil
- 3tsps of Olive Oil
- 3tsps of Avocado Oil
- 4-5 tsps of Abba Pure Color Protect Conditioner * I love this stuff*

I stayed under the dryer for a good 25mins on medium heat. After I rinsed and air dried, my hair was noticeably thicker, stronger and more durable while detangling. While manipulating my hair, I noticed less hairs in the comb (both breakage and shedding).

Honestly, it was a different feeling from what I`m use to. I feel as though these oils collaborated in a synergistic way to enhance and fortify the hair shaft drastically. Forget honey! I`m all for the 3PO (that`s my new name for them..3 Penetrating Oils). Just thought I`d share that experience with you all :-)

Now more than ever, I know how important it is to add oils to your deep conditioners or pre-shampoo treatments. I`m beginning to learn that water and oil is our hair`s best friend! Some conditioners give the illusion of healthy hair by just coating the hair shaft, whereas these oils have been proven to replenish the vital oils that give hair shine, bounce, strength and moisture.

Try this oil mixture and let me know how it goes :-)

Product Haul: Oils, Vitamins & Shea Butter! *Long & Pic Heavy*

One of my main goals for the last quarter of 2009 was to purchase some Multi-Vitamins and Fish Oils to implement into my day-to-day lifestyle, not for my hair, but for my overall health.

I didn't want a single, "one a day" style multi-vitamin tablet. I wanted something that would protect & nourish me throughout the whole day and something that's specific to my gender and age.

I paid a visit to Planet Organics Grocery Store (Toronto ladies, Hwy 7 & Bayview, Richmond Hill) and picked up a bottle of Progressive Women Multi-Vitamins for $29.

This vitamin is specific for adult women and it's loaded with great stuff, here's a little rundown of what it contains:
  1. Free Radical Defence - a unique combination of antioxidants including beta carotene, vitamin E, coenzyme Q-10, selenium, zinc, glutathione, and green tea extract help to protect us from ongoing exposure to free radicals.
  2. Cardiovascular Protection - hawthorn berries, ginkgo biloba extract, coenzyme Q10, niacin and vitamin E promote and protect proper heart and cardiovascular function.
  3. Enhanced Digestion - betaine hydrochloride and the plant based enzymes protease, amylase, lipase and cellulase assist in the digestion and utilization of both the nutrients contained in this formula as well as in the food we consume.
  4. Balanced PH - highly alkaline green food concentrates such as spirulina, chlorella, alfalfa, kelp, green tea and broccoli extracts have been added to help balance and restore a healthy ph level.
I will start taking the Multi-Vitamins this week and keep you all updated. In addition to the vitamins, I wanted more EFA's in my diet, although I eat an adequate amount of fish, I needed something more. I picked up some Udo's Oil 3,6,9 Blend.

For those that don't know, essential fats serve many functions in the human body. If taken in the right amounts/ratios & sources, EFA's can help establish and maintain good health. The benefits of EFA's are as follows:
  • Increase energy, performance, and stamina.
  • Strengthen the immune system.
  • Lower most risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
  • Improve brain function: mood, intelligence , behavior, and vision.
  • Aid in weight reduction. EFAs help keep mood and energy up and suppress appetite, thereby aiding in weight loss.
  • Regulate organs and glands.
  • Speed recovery and healing. EFAs are necessary for cell growth and division. They form all cell membranes and regulate vital cell activity;
  • Support healthy child development.
  • Improve digestion.
  • Decrease infection. EFAs have anti-fungal, anti-yeast, and anti-microbial properties, helping to protect against infections.
  • Keep bones strong. EFAs aid in the transport of minerals that keep bones and teeth strong, helping to prevent osteoporosis;
  • Protect genetic material.
  • Ease PMS.
  • Produce beautiful skin, hair, and nails. Some of the first signs of EFA deficiency are dry, flaky skin, dull hair, and brittle nails.
There you have it! EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids) are so essential. I purchased the Oil blend for $14.99. I will start taking it this week and provide you all with updates in a few weeks.

Moving on...

I stocked up on some Coconut oil for my Deep conditioners and Pre-poo Treatments. I bought 2 because one is specifically for my hair (Omega Nutrition Organic Coconut Oil), one is for my skin (Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil).

While at the Beauty Supply Store this weekend, I picked up some 100% Natural African Shea Butter for $7. I've always been curious about it but I never had the guts to purchase it since I don't know the best method or place to use it. So far I must say, I love the way it feels, it's EXTREMELY soft and moisturizing on my skin. Here are some pics I took:

Tips On How To Winterize Your Hair

For those who live in colder climates (including myself), all know that winter will soon be approaching. The heavy winds, snow, and drier air can take a serious toll on our hair if we don't take the necessary measures to protect it.

Here are several tips to help you prepare your hair to withstand the harsh winter weather:

  1. Cut down on Wash N Go's & Co-washes (walking outside with a wet head will probably get you sick). Co-washing 1-2x/week should be sufficient.
  2. Wash your hair in the evening so that your hair air dries overnight as opposed to when you're outside.
  3. Wear your hair up! Winter calls for thicker clothing, so wearing your hair up will protect your ends from snagging on wool coats, turtle necks, or sweaters you may be wearing.
  4. Moisturize more often! Ever notice how your skin needs more moisture in the winter? Well so does your hair. Moisturizing morning and night will help combat dryness.
  5. Bring out the heavier products! For example, Cholesterol Conditioners, Pomades, Butters (Shea, Cocoa, Mango).

  6. Increase and Intensify your Deep Conditioning Sessions. The dry heat inside the house and the cold air outside can pull moisture from the hair. Remember to deep condition with a heat source (steamer, hooded dryer, heat cap) for at least 30mins.
  7. Seal in your moisturizers with heavier oils. For example Castor Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Avocado Oil, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Hollywood Beauty Castor Oil, or an Oil Based Moisturizer. This will provide extra protection from the brisk weather.
  8. Try Hot Oil Treatments. You can do them as a pre-shampoo treatment (20mins with heat) or after you shampoo. For an extra kick, mix oils into your deep conditioners for a 2in1 treatment.
  9. Add a satin/silk lining into your winter hats. You can even wear a satin or silk bonnet underneath your hats to prevent your hair/ends from drying out.
  10. Hide your hair! Increase your protective styling. This will help retain length and lock in moisture. You can try buns, French Twists, Braids, Wigs (Half or Full), Weaves etc.

What You Didn't See After The Show With Chris Rock and Solange!

Oprah states that she would NEVER cut off her hair like Solange! Why? because she doesn't have the head for it. Do you think your head shape and features play a major role in which hair styles fit you best?
